The fourth industrial revolution ushers in technological advancement, powered mainly by the Internet, which drives other digital innovations including big data, Ecommerce, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, robotics, Internet-of-Things, drone as well as several other innovative technological solutions. 

Internet, hub of the fourth revolution 

The importance of the Internet could not been better appreciated than it is presently. Digitalization has equally led to further expansion of Ecommerce, leading to the emergence of the new global digital economy. By dominating trade, ecommerce has helped speed up advancement in areas such as Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) and Supply chain Management (SCM). 

More companies world-wide are now seeking new digital solutions in advertising, marketing and sales of their products and services, whereby ecommerce provided a ready vehicle for online shopping, movement of goods and digital payment processes. Online stores such as Amazon and Alibaba, two of the world’s largest retail merchant stores that, also tops the Fortune 500 richest companies. Records show that ecommerce revenue in the last quarter (Q4) of 2020, reached an all-time high of $4.13 trillion globally, compared to $3.46 trillion last year. 

This is an indication of the rapid growth experience in the online retailing sector. The increasing number of businesses setting up ecommerce websites will create an industry so large that, the market will become highly competitive, a situation whereby visibility becomes an issue for contending ecommerce websites. Making it to the top of Search Engine Result Pages will then require extra-ordinary efforts, especially for websites that are using generic campaign methods. 

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and ads campaign becomes an essential requirement to enhance website SERPs rating. Even when SEO and ads campaigns help to boost visibility, budget and effective digital marketing strategy plays a major role in the rating of sites by Search Engines. 

Conclusion 

In the modern day business environment, competition has moved from commercial centers and market places to the cloud. The emergence of a global digital economy has created an entirely new business model where Search Engines determine the rules of engagement. Therefore, for any company to become a big player and strives to control a significant share of the market, commensurate investment and professionalism is required by the company in their digital marketing efforts.
