Six Simple Ecommerce Startup Guide for Entrepreneurs

More than half of the world population have access to the Internet and 94% of them are workers and that means that there are over 3.8 billion potential working class shoppers who visit the Internet daily, making the Internet the single largest global market place. There is no reason why as a business owner, you should not be part of this free and open global market place.

There are many small businesses out there that have existed for many years and they have created a niche for themselves, but are yet to move to the global stage. As much as 94% of buyers conduct search for products online before making purchasing decision. Study has also shown that 70% of Internet traffic occur during business hours of 9am to 5pm. In one of my previous article, titled, “How to Setup an Ecommerce Marketing site for Startups,” I substantially covered what you need to know about the technical aspects of ecommerce.

As a business owner, your primary objective is to market your product or services; why then must you short-change yourself by lurking in the fringes in your immediate business environment, whereas you have access to the greater global online market place.

Study has also shown that 80% of all sales are through the Internet, which proves that there are far more sales online than in brick and mortar business outlets. Market experts have predicted that by the year 2020, over 3 billion people would start and finish their buying processes without any face-to-face engagement.

There is every reason for you to start your own ecommerce website this instance, and outlined below are some basic steps you need to follow to quickly setup your own storefront and begin to make sales, and earn that extra income.

1. Get a desktop or laptop computer

The computer system is one of the device through which you can establish connectivity to the Internet and provide storage for all your applications and files that you would need to upload to the Internet.

2. Subscribe to a Data Service Provider

Subscribing to an Internet data service would enable you to connect your computer to the Internet, and give you access to upload the photographs of your products to your ecommerce site, market your products and track your sales.

3. Get a camera

A camera is an essential requirement to enable you take snapshots of the products that you will be displaying on the site, and whereby you need to transfer still photographs from print to digital format, a scanner would be an optional device to acquire.

4. Build your website

As part of the processes of building a website, you are firstly, required to register a domain name for the business you are trying to create the website for, and then subscribe to a hosting services. Domain name is your online unique identifier, while the host server provides storage for the web based files as well as access to the Internet. Secondly, you must purchase an ecommerce software that allows you upload your products and receive funds transfer for purchases made on the site.

5. Upload your products online

It is pertinent to ensure that you have taken sharp and clean shots of your products, provide clear product details, which includes descriptions and price tags, before you start uploading them to your storefront before sales begin.

6. Promote your website

One of the critical components of starting an ecommerce storefront is the promotion of your site, and that is to increase the site’s visibility on Google and other search engines, which attracts traffic to the site.

You can find more details about site visibility from my previous articles, which are titled, “Why Brand Visibility is Important for Startups,” and “Search Engine Optimization and Lead Generation Strategy”.
